Mentor Meetings

1. 21/02/14

Met with Mentor and introduced myself. Discussed backgrounds and discussed dates for possible observations. My mentor has had 40 years experience in teaching ESOL.

2. 26/3/2014

Informed Mentor that I have been placed on a placement- job centre Class. I have never taught this type of learner and was not sure what to do . Mentor advised about Scheme of work, and discussed the ESOL core curriculum. Mentor lent me her copy of ESOL Core curriculum handbook. She explained how the handbook is laid out and how to interpret the codes. She explained the 4 skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

3. 28/4/14

Discussed previous observed lesson and I asked for advise on how to teach Entry 1 learners. She explained a few methods that she implements such as using word games.

4. 6/05/2014

Discussed observation that is due on the 08/05/2014. My lesson is on CV writing and I needed some advise on how best to plan for this lesson and best place to obtain resources. Mentor provided me with a list of helpful websites, and lesson planning ideas.

5. 08/5/14

Met mentor after observation and discussed lesson. She was satisfied with my lesson but advised on points for improvement and commented on my drilling techniques and how I need to improve them. Also gave me tips on how to differentiate effectively.

5. 15/10/2014

Had a meeting with new mentor at my workplace as the College could not offer me a placement due to cuts in classes. My new mentor is an experienced EFL teacher and CELTA trainer. Mentor gave advice on my lesson plan as I am due to be observed next week on the 20th. Was struggling to get a spoken text for students to analyse and we visited various websites together which gave me an excellent idea for a spoken text. I found Steven Sutton’s video on his bucket list and how he raised money for charity. I could use this piece for my upcoming ESOL assignment as well.

6. 20/10/2014

Discussed observation and mentor gave advised on how to include weaker students and how to reduce teacher centred focus. Gave tips on how to vary feedback.

7.14/01/15

Asked mentor for advice on next observation and issues I have with planning my lesson. Students will watch a video on a perfect day out in Barcelona. I needed a task to end the lesson and mentor advised me possible tasks that I could use. Mentor suggested some games I could play with students as I am not confident in playing word games with the students.

8. 20/02/15

Discussed up coming lesson observation. Really nervous about embedding numeracy into lesson as my learners are all mature adults with good educational backgrounds, so not sure of how to embed. Mentor suggested a text from course book with statistics that the students could analyse. She also directed me to various websites.

9. 05/03/15

Discussed upcoming assignment on curriculum design theories and how to create a curriculum that is inclusive. Mentor gave tips on things I could add to my curriculum.

9. 22/4/15

Discussed lesson observation and mentor was pleased and felt that I have improved since last year. She commented on my lesson and said that I need to be “pacier” during the lesson and that I need to continue to develop feedback and experiment with different techniques.

10. 07/05/15

Discussed on going CPD with mentor and asked if I could observe some of her lessons. She also suggested that we undertake some action research in the departments and come together and discuss them. She also will arrange some peer observations, and look into some courses for the staff.
