Professional Values and attributes
- Reflect on what works best in your teaching and learning to meet the diverse needs of learners.
In my reflections above and please see more reflections in the reflection tab I have been able to reflect on what I can do to meet the diverse needs of learners.
Maria- power point presentation
In the presentation (see above) I have analysed the needs of a student and have been able to investigate the students background and then been able to identify her needs. I have then thought of strategies to help her learn.
In my assignments (see assignment 3 and 4) below I have been able to evaluate theories, and teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of the learners.
Additional Diploma in ESOL learning and teaching- asignment 11
- Evaluate and challenge your practice, values and beliefs.
assignment 4– In this assignment I looked at language learning theories and critically evaluated them to language learning. I critically analysed them to show how they affect our practice in English Language Teaching. Assignment 6– In this assignment I have evaluated and critically analysed the role of an FE tutor and discussed professionalism with regards to my values beliefs and my practice. Reflection of Evaluation and accountability issues– In this reflection I reflected on issues of accountability and evaluation and how these affect our practice and beliefs and values. |

- Inspire, motivate and raise aspirations of learners through your enthusiasm and knowledge.
My mentor observed on the 21/012015 that I established a “purposeful and motivating environment”
My peer observed me on the 1/05/2015 and observed that many interesting and fun activities were used in the session (such as competitions using pictures) and this made session very enjoyable. Learners were all motivated and actively involved in the task.
In feed back from the learner one learner commented was asked how the teacher gives him ideas about to help him want to learn English. he replied that “the teacher give me ideas to help me want to learn English discussing about English traditions, as things in England are different from my country. This improve my desire to learn English and know more about English history”. When asked in what ways the teacher encourages him to learn English he/she said “I think my teacher encourages me to learn English giving me ideas of what to see or read about something we are talking about”.
My mentor in feedback observed that “it was gratifying to hear so much English spoken in a group which was largely monolingual- this is a testament to how well you motivate the group”
observation feedback 5- Wendy Croft
- Be creative and innovative in selecting and adapting strategies to help learners to learn.
In the assignment (see below) I have looked at various ways of adapting strategies to help learners to learn. In my lesson plans I have utilised questions and answers, gap fill activities, listening tasks, writing tasks, and speaking activities. Please also see resources in lesson plans.
In my presentation about Critical Discourse Analysis I used Fairclough’s model to demonstrate to my colleagues how this model can be used to analyse an authentic text. I used a power point and pictures as a strategy the better understanding of the topic.
In my explanation about the passive I have presented the class with a power point presentation about the passive as a strategy to learn grammar.
In my lesson plan I have started the lesson with playing some word games with the learners to revise superlatives and comparatives from the previous lesson. Playing word games makes the lesson more interesting and the learners learn whilst having some competitive fun.
Peer observation lesson plan-10- Mayumi
- Value and promote social and cultural diversity, equality of opportunity and inclusion
- In feedback from my learners they were asked,”How does your teacher involve you in being part of the class?, and how would you say your teacher treats you? how often does your teacher praise you and respect you?The students said that
“after several lessons I have become able to handle more and more easily through discussion and dialogue in the classroom. My teacher respected and understand my education and my culture”
another student said, that “always she ask to us to speak with our classmate or with everybody. She always take care of us, she said to us when we speak good thing or when we speak something with a good English. I love my teacher. She is very good”.
another student said, that “the teacher involves me in being part of the class, asking me questions and involving in the discussion that is taking place in the class. I’d say my teacher treats me with respect, she understand what I say and when I say something correctly she praise me”.
As an EFL/ESOL tutor teaching international students in my lesson plans I try to include the learners by asking them to discuss their countries and their culture. In my lesson plan I have included the learners when they discuss the landscapes in their countries.PG Dip lesson plan- 5&6
I gave the learners individual maps of their countries and asked them to discuss with the class the various different types of landscapes such as mountains and rivers in their countries.
- Build positive and collaborative relationships with colleagues and learners.
- In the picture below I attended a team meeting (11/03/2015 and 18/03/2015) with my colleagues to discuss the 2014 Professional Standards. I contributed some ideas as to what we can use to evidence the Standards.
- In tutor feedback the learners were asked how their teacher helps them and supports them with their learning.
The students replied by saying ” She is very patient, she repeat the things if we need to listen something more”. Another learner says that “she is all time being interested in us, to see if we understand what she conveys” and another learner states that “The teacher is important in the education process not only teach English, as well as provide advice on some matters of life and this is what encourages students to overcome language difficulties and dealing with different dialects”.
Professional knowledge and understanding
- Maintain and update knowledge of your subject and /or vocational area
- Please see CPD page where I have uploaded a certificate of attendance. I have attended an English Course at Level 3. This course was very useful as I improved my grammar and English teaching methods. I learnt to correct learners’ errors and give positive feedback. It was a 7 week course.
I have attended the IATEFL conference for the past 2 years and the NACTELCA conference. At these conferences I attended workshops and watched some lectures on English teaching. Please see my CPD page for details.
In all my reflections, please see reflections pages, I have made links to research links when reflecting.
I am registered with Cambridge English who regularly send me articles to read and webinars to watch to update my knowledge. Please see my CPD page on WordPress to find all my CPD. I watched a webinar 16/06/2015 by Craig Thaine from Cambridge English with regards to second language theories and how they should be implemented in the classroom.
I have observed some senior colleagues and learnt what strategies they applied whilst teaching( Please see lesson plans below). One senior teacher was teaching the learners how to read a tourist leaflet, and I clearly noted the stages she used to achieve her objectives.
- Maintain and update your knowledge of educational research to develop evidence-based practice.
I have registered to watch webinars on Cambridge English at http://www.cambridgeenglish.org where I have watched my first webinar on the 16th of June by Craig Thaine who talked about recent theories in Second Language acquisition. These theories included the Process ability Theory (1998,2005) and the Complexity Theory and both theories shed light on how learners learn second languages.
- Apply theoretical understanding of effective practice in teaching, learning and assessment drawing on research and other evidence.
In my assignment below I researched English learning theories and have tried to understand how these can be effective in teaching ESOL. I also researched Task based learning and how this can be successfully implemented in my teaching.
assignment 4 (see pages 3-14)
In my reflection I have included theories of learning to illustrate how I have been influenced by these theories in my teaching. See reflection below.
- Evaluate your practice with others and assess its impact on learning.
I have reflected on how concepts of evaluation and accountability have affected our practice in a reflection (see below).
Reflection of Evaluation and accountability issues
I also presented a talk on how Internal and external verifiers and external examining bodies affect our teaching (See presentation PowerPoint below).
Internal and External verification and External Examination -full slide
I also listened and made comments on my colleagues talks on how certain issues of evaluation and accountability affected our practice. This is a Power Point presentation of one of my colleagues.
Performance indicators and funding
- Manage and promote positive learner behaviour.
My mentor observed on 03/03/14 (see observation report below) that I have an “extremely positive and encouraging manner to which this lively and interested group responded well”, and “the class were engaged and generally “on task” so behaviour management wasn’t an issue”
observation feedback from Wendy
My tutor also observed that I was able to “manage and promote positive behaviour” and this is a strength.
observation feedback 5- Wendy Croft
Another tutor who observed me on the 03/04/14 (see observation report below) also stated that I “created a purposeful atmosphere and the students seemed to enjoy the work set. They also like to interact with you as you have a supportive and friendly manner”. He agreed that I can “manage behaviour and challenge discriminatory attitudes”.
Observation 2- feedback from Andrew
- Understand and teaching and professional role and your responsibilities.
- Assignments. In my assignment (see below) I reflected and researched on what the roles and responsibilities are of an FE teacher.
Part 1- roles and responsibilities of teacher
In my assignment I reflected on the teaching profession and concepts of professionalism, core professional values, CPD and reflective practice. I then related these concepts to my own role as a teacher in FE teaching.
When reflecting, I conducted action plans for development and improvement. I set out dates for achievement, and tried my best to achieve them. (Please see action plan record below).
Action Plan Development and achievement
Professional Skills
- Motivate and inspire learners to promote achievement and develop their skills to enable progression.
In my feedback from my tutor when she observed me she stated that, “I have an extremely positive and encouraging manner to which this lively and interested group responded well. You very effectively showed interest in all their contributions which was highly motivating.”
observation feedback from Wendy
My mentor also observed that I “checked the Ss’ progress throughout the lesson and used a variety of questioning and checking questions to ensure they were achieving the outcomes of each stage”
mentor feedback- Observation 8- Vasiliki S
- Plan and deliver effective learning programmes for diverse groups or individuals in a safe and inclusive environment.
- In my assignment (please see assignment 5 below) I have successfully constructed a curriculum proposal that demonstrates an ability to be inclusive. It includes a scheme of work that is inclusive.
- Assignment 5 -essay
My tutor after observing my lesson stated that I “have a warm, inclusive and engaging teaching style”.( please see observation strengths).
- Promote the benefits of technology and support learners in its useMy mentor stated on the 08.05.14 that ” the use of Power Point Presentation motivated learners even more to link with their experience of applying for jobs”, and that I “used and promoted benefits of new and emerging technologies”. I have used a Power point presentation to teach my colleagues how Faircloughs model is used for discourse analysis. This Power Point presentation was suitable for the intended audience.
My colleagues observed that I am a “great communicator”, and that my presentation was “very clearly presented”, and it was an “extremely clear delivery of principles, context and resources”. In this lesson I successfully used Power Point. The lesson was based on Steven Sutton’s bucket list. I have used various images taken from the internet. I have also added his interview taken from the internet as the basis of my lesson. I have used Word documents to produce resources for the lesson.
My students were asked to write about a business idea that they thought about that could become successful in the future. Please see picture of students using ICT systems to write me an email about their idea. Please see screenshot of one student’s email. In my lesson (see end of lesson plan) I advised my students about the different websites they could use to improve their English for reading, skimming and scanning skills. I also advised students about looking at different websites for reading short stories. I also asked them to read some books by a few authors that were suitable for their level.
- Address the Mathematics and English needs of learners and work creatively to overcome individual barriers to learningIn my lesson on “Google” I have addressed the numeracy needs of the learners by asking them to calculate percentages and also to analyse an infographic
mentor feedback- Observation 8- Vasiliki S
I have also addressed the English needs in all my lessons. In all my lessons I have taught all four skills, reading, writing, speaking, and listening (see lesson plan below). my mentor states “clear aim and detailed and measurable outcomes, which cover and build upon listening, speaking and writing. The lesson plan is very detailed with clear evidence of thought about links between the four skills and it moves through the lesson in short, sequential steps.
- Enable learners to share responsibility for their own learning and assessment, setting goals that stretch and challenge.
I have asked the learners in this lesson to look at various websites for reading material. Websites such as the British council website (see end of lesson) and http://www.macmillanenglish.com. This is to encourage them to read material on line and to be responsible for their own learning. The learners are encouraged to read and then they can return with a review and any further questions.
Peer observation lesson plan-10- Mayumi
In this lesson I have asked the learners for homework ( see end of lesson plan) to find a job advert in their local job centre. Fill in the application form and bring it into class for me to check. This is to encourage the learners to be self reliant as regards to finding a suitable job and applying for it.
- Apply appropriate and fair methods of assessment and provide constructive and timely feedback to support progression and achievement.
In my observed lesson dated 21/01/2015,(see below) my tutor observed that I was very good at providing “constructive feedback to support progression and achievement” and I “asked both targeted and whole grop questions to check learning and gave regular and specific feedback”.
In my observed lesson dated 03/03/14 my tutor observed (see below) that “a variety of assessment tools were used-q&a, worksheet completion, listening task completion, production of a piece of writing, etc-all of which were affective and appropriate”, and ” peer assessment was planned”.
In my feedback to students work. I have praised them for their efforts and I have also commented on their mistakes and ways in which they could improve.
- Maintain and update your teaching and training expertise and vocational skills through collaboration with employers.
My employers are very keen to make sure we comply with CPD. They encourage their staff to observe colleagues and attend conferences and encourage online CPD. They funded my attendance to the the IATEFL and Natelca conference. Please see CPD page for further details.
I have a CPD record at work, see below
- Contribute to organisational development and quality improvement through collaboration with others.
18/07/2014 (standardising meeting)
Whilst working at The University of Leeds summer pre-sessional course for graduates, I attended meeting with regards to marking of assignments. The staff marked assignments based on the criteria and then met together to discuss the grades and any issues involved with grades and marking. This made sure that all the staff had a good understanding on what to expect whilst marking and getting to know the grading criteria.
Summer 2013/14
Had staff meetings every Friday afternoon to discuss timetabling, issues with lessons, creating new tasks, and the progress and marking of assignments. We worked with other staff to develop the course.
Action English
At the place where I work we have meetings every month with senior staff to discuss the progress of the course. I am teaching pre intermediate learners at the moment and using a course book called Speakout by Pearson Longman in collaboration with The BBC. We discuss lesson plans and ways of using different strategies for learners to improve. In our last meeting (15/06/2015)I discussed the frustration I felt with the lack of ICT in my class and I discussed with senior management how these resources can greatly help with the learning of my learners. I promoted the use of ICT, and how there also should be an ICT room available for the learners. The other staff agreed and senior management are looking into making every classroom have ICT resources.
